Library of Black Lies: Interactive Workshop

What happens when book arts meet a community-based conversation about Blackness during challenging political times?
Join a workshop at the community based art space Wa Na Wari and artists Edgar Arceneaux and Damion Hayes. Arceneaux’s Henry Art Gallery installation Library of Black Lies grapples with the different and sometimes contradictory meanings of Blackness by questioning how we make up meanings through books and beyond. Local curator/gallerist/craftsman Damion Hayes explores what it means to make space and make meaning by making exhibits, convening people, and most recently by wood working. During the workshop participants will respond to Arcenaux’s work and contemporary conversations about anti-Blackness, Black joy and racial justice while literally deconstructing collected books via collage and more.
This workshop is free and all ages. Registration required. This workshop is made possible with support from Wa Na Wari and the Seattle Public Library Foundation.
CREDITS

This program is in conjunction with Edgar Arceneaux's time as a Gurvich Contemporary Art Project visiting artist. It is made possible in-part by the Helen & Max Gurvich Fund. Gurvich Projects seek to build connections between Seattle audiences and artists, both locally and around the globe, who are defying convention through their practice. These visiting artists are invited to explore ideas and engage with a range of audiences via a series of experimental programs and platforms.

This event is public.
ACCESSIBILITY
Access to the first floor of the house (where the workshop takes place) requires going up a short driveway and seven steps with a handrail. The bathroom is on the second floor of the house, up one flight of stairs, with a handrail. We are exploring options for increasing accessibility at Wa Na Wari.
